Q: What is the 2019 Trades & Technology Scholarships for Women?

A: The 2019 Trades & Technology Scholarships for Women are scholarships targeted at women in resource development. NL Hydro has partnered with Women in Resource Development Corporation (WRDC), who will be administering the funding for six $1500 scholarships for trades programs relevant to the energy industry.


Q: What are the eligibility criteria for the 2019 Trades & Technology Scholarships for Women?

A: The six $1500 scholarships will be awarded to full-time female students for their first year of studies in one of the following programs:

Trades

  • ​Welder
  • ​Carpenter
  • ​Machinist
  • ​Powerline Technician
  • ​Heavy Duty Equipment Technician
  • ​Construction/Industrial Technician
  • ​Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)

​Technology

  • ​Civil Engineering Technology
  • ​Electrical Engineering Technology
  • ​Electronics Systems Engineering Technology
  • ​Power Engineering Technology
  • ​Instrumentation & Controls Engineering
  • ​Mechnical Engineering Technology
  • ​C​hemical Control Engineering Technology

Recipients are selected on the basis of acceptance into a program of study at a recognized post-secondary institution of choice.

Applicants must be entering their first year in one of the programs listed above.

Applicants must be permanent residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.

If applicants use examples to demonstrate skills relating to: safety and health, teamwork, communication, leadership, dignity and respect, it would be considered an asset.

Preference may be given to students who demonstrate financial need. 

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of an unbiased application and selection process.


Q: When and where are applications available?

Q: When are applications due?

A: Applications must be submitted by July 31, 2019 and will not be accepted after that date. The selection committee, made up of WRDC-ERC employees, will review the applications, announce the scholarship recipients and, award the scholarships September 25, 2019.


Q: ​What additional information/documents must accompany the application?

A: Applicants will submit a Trades Scholarship application form, along with the following:            

  • ​​Resume
  • ​​Written essay (telling us why you deserve a scholarship to a maximum of 500 words)
  • ​Reference letter (minimum of 1 maximum of 2)
  • Acceptance letter from educational institution (once issued)

​Recognizing NL Hydro’s strong safety culture and the company’s continuous focus on external safety promotion/community engagement, bonus points may be granted if applicants successfully illustrate a personal commitment to safety.
