Profile

Name: Kimberley  Hobbs

Occupation: Senior Biologist, Environmental Biomonitoring

Employer: Oceans Ltd.

Education: Master of Science in Biology

What does your typical workday involve?

As senior biologist at Oceans Ltd. I work with a team of biologists and biochemists to monitor the effects of industry on aquatic animal health. A typical day involves a combination of lab work, data analysis, report writing, and proposal writing. Some of my work involves working with other team members, especially during sampling field trips, but most of the time I work solo conducting biochemical, chemical, and histopathological analysis of samples.

What do you most love about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

I love that I am continually learning. The ocean has a vast wealth of knowledge, both known and yet to be discovered. I love that my job allows me to continue being the explorer I was as a child.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM?

I have wanted to work in the field of biology since elementary school. I have always had a love of nature and a curiosity that was fed by my Father, who was an avid hunter and angler, and by watching nature shows, especially anything with David Attenborough.

What were your favorite subjects in school?

My favourite subjects in school were biology, chemistry, and literature.

What advice would you give girls, who are still in school, who might be considering a career like yours?

The job market for different career paths ebb and flow, but if you have a passion for something you will find a niche for yourself that will fuel your passion. Look beyond the traditional jobs in your field. A biologist studies life, but it doesn’t have to be life as we know it.

Why do we need more women in skilled trades and STEM?

Women approach problems differently than men. The unique perspectives women bring to the science discussion, in collaboration with their male counterparts leads to some creative and innovative solutions.

Who was your role model? What about this person inspires you?

My parents were my first role models. They taught me an appreciation for nature and encouraged my exploration of all the mysteries to be found there. Throughout my career I have had numerous teachers and colleagues who have and continue to inspire me.

What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?

My favourite activities are gardening, Tribal Fusion Belly dance, and Yoga.

What superhero do you relate to most? Why?

I have a deep admiration for real life superheroes like Diane Fossey, Eugenie Clark, Rachel Carson, and David Attenborough for both their conservation efforts and for their contribution to advancing scientific knowledge and education.
