Kendra Bursey
Profile
Name: Kendra Bursey
Occupation: Civil EIT ( Engineer-in-Training)
Employer: NL Hydro
Education: Bachelor of Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland

What does your typical workday involve?
I am based in the office therefore most of my work is completed inside. However I work on a lot of projects which are all over Newfoundland and Labrador. On average I travel to a site somewhere in the province about once a month during the construction season (May-Sept/Oct). All the projects that I work on are completed with a team, so my day will consist of time working by myself and time in meetings with the other team members.
What do you most love about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I chose engineering because I loved math and physics in high school. I liked the idea of doing design work and creating something that is of a benefit to the public. I love that I am faced with new challenges all the time, I like working on projects as a team and I enjoy being able to travel as part of my job. I also have a passion for the environment so I take pride in knowing that my job contributes to creating renewable energy for the people of our province.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM?
I think I knew since junior high that I would want to work in a STEM related field.
What were your favorite subjects in school?
Math & Physics!
What advice would you give girls, who are still in school, who might be considering a career like yours?
If you are considering a STEM related field I would concentrate on math and science courses. Having physics and chemistry is needed for engineering! Also if there are opportunities to do any advanced courses in math and sciences I would take advantage of that!
Why do we need more women in skilled trades and STEM?
Having a diverse workplace has proven to be more effective. We need more women in skilled trades and STEM to improve these fields and advance them because we now know that having a good balance of women and men in any field yields better results.
Who was your role model? What about this person inspires you?
My mom has always been my role model. She was a nurse for her whole career and moved up to management roles. She always had a very good balance between work and home life which I appreciated growing up. I hope to follow in her footsteps and work my way up in my career as well and hopefully enter into management one day!
What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?
I love playing sports! I play hockey and volleyball which are so much fun. I also have a super sweet puppy who I love taking on walks and adventures. I love camping, traveling, and trying new things!
What superhero do you relate to most? Why?
Superman. Because I strive to be a good leader and I have always wanted to fly!
