2023 Scholarship Recipients

WRDC, in partnership with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, awarded scholarships of $1,500 to six students entering their first year of a skilled trade or technology program.

The Trades & Technology Scholarships were designed to help with the financial challenges full-time students can face during their first-year studies in trades and technology programs. The scholarship recipients are full-time students pursuing exciting careers in programs such as Welding, Carpentry, Machinist, Powerline Technician, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Construction/Industrial Electrician, Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Systems Engineering Technology, Power Engineering Technology, Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, and Environmental Engineering Technology.


2023 Trades & Technology Scholarship Recipients:

chelsea tibbo

Chelsea Tibbo

Growing up seeing her father work as a Hydraulic Technician, and her grandfather as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic, Chelsea has always had a passion for mechanics. As an athlete in school, she grew into a coaching role and works to instill the importance of hard work, respect, dedication, and compassion in young athletes. Chelsea recognizes the importance of giving back to her community, which helped shape her into the person she is today. Following her passion for mechanics, Chelsea is currently completing the Heavy Equipment Technician/Transport Mechanic program at College of the North Atlantic.

Ma Clara Jean Estillomo

Coming from a background in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Ma Clara Jean has longed to pursue her dream career in Civil Engineering since high school. When she saw our Trades & Technology Scholarship on social media, she knew this was the opportunity she needed to move forward and create a fulfilling future for herself and her children. We are thrilled that we could help Ma Clara Jean achieve her dreams, as she started the Civil Engineering Technology program at College of the North Atlantic this fall.

Julia Gulliver

After buying a fixer-upper with her Grammy, Julia fell in love with carpentry. With the help of her partner, they turned their house into a home by renovating it top to bottom. Knowing she wanted to leave retail management, Julia’s ever-growing passion for carpentry motivated her to pursue her hobby as a career. She is currently completing the Carpentry program at Carpenters Millwright College.

Renee Judge

Renee recently completed the Women of Steel program at College of the North Atlantic and is currently enrolled in their Welding program. Thanks to funded programs like Women of Steel, and scholarship opportunities like this one, Renee is grateful that she can advance her career and is excited for this next step in her career path for herself and her children.

emmajoan major

EmmaJoan Major

Growing up playing hockey and basketball, EmmaJoan is a natural team-player. After attending MUN’s Grenfell campus this year, she decided that she wanted a more hands on education and career. EmmaJoan is currently completing the Civil Engineering Technology program at College of the North Atlantic, and is determined to showcase her skills from sports in the workshop.

Katie Hawkins

Growing up as a Girl Guide, Katie learned what it meant to be a leader and problem-solver at an early age. She made her way to Second Year Ranger and became a mentor to young girls in her community, instilling them with same skills she learned as a young Girl Guide. Katie graduated at the top of her class and made the move to Corner Brook to pursue the Millwright program at College of the North Atlantic this year. Katie is excited to finish her program and is determined to have a successful career in skilled trades.
